August 15 ,2010 : Ed Gray on Urban Gas Drilling

As the summer winds down to a marathon finish, let us take time to focus on what the city is doing. In the Westchester community, there is a movement to address the gas drilling permits in our community. The community has been mobilized and is seeking a moratorium on the gas drilling.

I am personally against gas drilling in urban areas. The problem is that the area of Westchester is considered rural in some areas. In fact the post office considers the delivery of some areas of Westchester to be still rural.

The focus of the anti drilling is the structural integrity of the neighborhoods. Fear of earthquakes and a environmental concerns is the focus of the anti drilling citizens. The Gasland video is playing a prominent part in fueling anti drilling in Westchester. The following is the trailer for the movie. If interested hit the link for other Gasland you tube clips.

On the other side of the issue is the property rights of those who favor gas drilling. They have rights as well.No matter the outcome nobody will be satisfied.
My hope is that the city proposes more stringent codification to address the concerns of the community. More to come at a later date.

God Bless you and God Bless Texas !

One note about Gasland -- did you notice that none of the examples were from Texas and all of the examples were from states without a natural gas drilling regulatory agency?

There are many different ways to view urban drilling. I am personally a proponent of using all the resources we have domestically to fuel our future. From a property rights stand point, they buy the land, they can use the land. It is up to the city and state to provide reasonable regulations for drilling. We, unlike other states, have a very strict oil and gas regulation agency in the Railroad Commission. If people are opposed to the aesthetics, they need to get over it, if they worry about safety, they need to look at the statistics, if they fear their water being contaminated, that is a reasonable concern, but as the previous comment said, that video "Gasland" did not show Texas.

Chesapeake is one of the highest regarded companies when it comes to gas well drilling and safety, something to consider. The quality of the company that is doing the drilling matters in these instances. But people can not have it both ways regarding drilling.

Global Warming hysteria? Gas is a bridge fuel that is much cleaner than oil. Do you think the people would be happy about a windmill sitting 50-100 feet in the air for many years to come? property value decline without the royalty payment from the gas company. A drilling rig will sit on the property from 30-90 days. There will be noise, there will be some shaking as they drill the rig but people need to realize that most parties are compensated during these times.

We must use our resources, if people worry about the technology used, their are ways to get it regulated to make it safer and that all precautions are met.

Wow. This is a lot of misinformation. "Gasland" has an entire segment on Dish, Texas. Mayor Calvin Tillman is interviewed for a big part of that segment. Fort Worth is prominently featured in the film. It's clear that the two commenters here enjoy being misinformed. That's very sad. But it's the way the gas and oil industry works its magic. Spreading misinformation has a name. Unethical comes to mind.
